I felt pretty good when I put on this outfit, but now that I look at it in photos I think maybe it's too twee? Maybe there are too many whimsical components and they're all competing? I'm not sure. Every now and then I go through these stupid first-world crises where I have no idea what is ugly and what's not and I have trouble dressing myself, and I am definitely doing that now. I do know I god damn LOVE this novelty-print 1950s dress though. I bought it from House of Maryanne before I went away, and when I got back it was waiting at the foot of my bed for me. When I haven't been wearing it, it's been hanging on my wall like a piece of art. Not only is the under-the-sea print phenomenal, but it fits really well and got the perfect big pockets so I can carry all my junk around in them. Today I was feeling a little better thanks to hitting the inhalers hard, so went into town with my lady flatmates for beer and chips, and it was awesome to get out of the house after doing nothing for so long.
After she struck up a conversation about the length of my hair, I spent a good half hour trying to persuade the lovely girl who poured my pint to try going shampoo-free, which I started doing after I read about Eline's success with it. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell everyone reading this to give it a try too, as it not only does amazing things to your hair but is ridiculously cheap. I now only wash my hair once a fortnight-ish, which is totally not gross but actually really awesome. It's good for the hot water bill and good for me. If you find your hair problematic in any way you should seriously consider giving this a try, it will basically solve all your follicular problems.
As usual these photos are by the wonderful Kita!

My face looks funny in this one but I like it?
(Wearing 1950s novelty print day dress from House of Maryanne vintage, tights from H&M Kids via my mum, vintage green princess coat from Zwzzy, black t-bar ballet flats from Trademe, cane basket bag from Two Squirrels Vintage, and opshopped mustard woolen beret)
I think this outfit is really pretty - my only suggestion would be that maybe it would be nicer without the tights (which would obviously require nicer weather) and with a different bag - I think the bag you have is amazing but there are a lot of competing colours in this outfit so maybe paring it back would allow each gorgeous piece to shine more. That dress is amaaazing though!! My hair has been an unhealthy disaster lately...had never considered going shampooless before but I'm willing to try anything if it will improve its overall condition so thanks for the tip :)
ReplyDeleteno such thing as too twee imo
ReplyDeleteOOh such a pretty print! And I know what you mean, I have similar middle class problems where I can't even decide what is my taste or style anymore! haha xx
ReplyDeleteI actually did the whole no-poo thing a few years ago but with bad results. I ended up having residue; my hairdresser was ready to kill me because it wasn't helping my color and she had to do a few rounds of clarifying shampoo to get it out and deep condition it. I also found I was too lazy to mix up the baking soda solution regularly; it was easier to just use shampoo. I *did* find out that I only really need to wash my hair every 4 days or so with regular shampoo though. For a while I was using the Genuine African Black Formula shampoo, which is more gentle than regular shampoo. So at least it was worth it to find that out.
ReplyDeleteSuch an amazing dress Georgia! x
ReplyDeleteThat print is amazing and I love it with that coat. Is there really such a thing as too twee? If there is, I don't think your outfit is it. Maybe if you added 12 bows that would make it too twee. I did the shampoo free thing for a while a few years ago but then I got sick of it for reasons I can't quite remember.
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit! fantastic colours! xx
ReplyDeletesuch a cute dress! i get that feeling every now and then too, but never fear, you look adorable! also i would never have thought to stop shampooing my hair. i wash it every second day and if i don't straight away it feels greasy and looks horrible. :( i'm sure it would get used to not being washed but the in between stage would be awful!
ReplyDeleteNooo I LOVE this. That dress is PERFECT. Ahh why must we be on opposite sides of the world, I want to drink tea and/or gin with you!
ReplyDeletecute dress and coat. those pieces seem to be made for each other...

Lovely look! The coat and hat are particularly adorable (I do have a soft spot for mustard though). I am seriously in awe of your vintage collection and super jealous too, kudos to you for collecting such wonderful pieces. Also, you have to tell me all your secrets! I'm returning to the motherland on holiday this summer/winter, and even though London has great charity shops I'd love to trawl Wellington's collection too, but I have no idea where to look. So, pretty please with a cherry on top? You are a fountain of charity shop/vintage knowledge (in a completely non-creepy metaphorical way).
ReplyDeleteWoah, so you're a Kiwi? I had no idea! Give me your email address and I will hook you up with everything I know about vintage and second-hand in Wellington. Are you coming at the end of this year for NZ summer or for the UK summer coming up soon? I will probably be able to wrangle a car and we could go on a bit of an adventure.
