Princess Dress

I got this amazing lilac sheer chiffon collared 1950s handmade dress on TradeMe intending to hem it to a slightly more wearable length, but when it arrived and I tried it on I feel strangely in love with its ankle-grazing skirt and have decided to keep it like this. Usually I am extremely defensive of my right to alter vintage in any way I desire to make it more wearable or practical, but this one has left me stuck. I wasn't planning to go to my university graduation 'cause they're hideously boring, but now I think I may have to just so I have a legit occasion to wear this dress - other than for a walk to the park.

My flatmate took pity on me when she saw me wearing it around the house and we went for a wander to take some pixxx. I'm wearing it with a vintage lilac lace slip and vintage t-bar 1960s flats. The best thing about starting work at 6am (possibly the only good thing?) is finishing early and being able to enjoy the afternoon sun.

  2. This is a gorgeous frock! Might I say that you could wear this out even to a cafe? Just because. It would be a shame to restrict its exuberance. Beautiful.

    1. I think I am going to have to! I reckon with a pair and ballet flats and a sunhat I could probably manage it? I have it hanging on my wall at the moment because I don't want to put it away.

  3. God you look ethereal! I am now convinced you have some natural talent for scoring vintage dresses. This is why I will always jump at the chance to buy off any of your rejects, can't wait to receive the dress I bought off your recent trademe auctions!

I, too, defend my right to alter vintage if and as I see fit, but occasionally I just can't bring myself to do it...and I don't think I could have fiddled with this sweetie either!

    1. She is lovely isn't she! I hate it when people say they could NEVER alter vintage, but some things are just too perfect to destroy. Thank you!!

  6. Oh wow that is an awesome dress and you are totally rocking it!! Those swirly twirly photos are amazing. That is an intriguing pink. You're right - would be perfect for a graduation.. you can dance across the stage. T'would be a shame to put one of those dull black robes over it though..
And I love the other blog of your flatmate.. but there are no deets on it.... who is this elusive talented creative being? His/her blog is major eye candy..

    1. Thank you! You are right though, it would be a shame to cover it. I bet I'd have to get a special cap too - my family have ginormous heads and my brother had to get his graduation mortar custom-made for his noggin haha.
She is an elusive creature alright! Her name is Kita and she's a talented babe who I met on Livejournal when I was 13 or so. She makes a mean coffee and takes a mean photo, obviously!

  11. It is so pretty. I had the same conundrum with a very similar dress. I ended up hemming it because it pretty much dragged on the ground. I really like the length of yours, though. It's not too long. I'm not going to my uni graduation either because boring and expensive are not really my thing.

  20. You look like you're having so much fun, and the dress is outrageously dreamy! I've had similar "to shorten or not to shorten?" quandries with vintage pieces in the past. For example, I bought a white 50's skirt with a loud Picasso-esque print in shades of bright red, blue, and yellow. I figured I'd shorten it (it's maybe a bit longer than mid-calf), but it makes me feel like a magical flamenco dancer as is, so I may just leave it long!
