Hey, Wellington friends, my pal Laura and I are selling vintage tomorrow at the Frank Kitts Underground Market down at the waterfront! We have SO MUCH STUFF and all priced to sell, so do come down. Most of it is 1950s but there's some 40s, 60s and 70s as well as a handful of more modern things.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a small sample of what we've got to go:</div>

I haven't done an Instagram roundup post in like four months. Here goes!<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Some Repettos I got for $20, belts opshopped while road tripping around the North Island, and the beautiful mid-century beside table my fella opshopped for me and carried home! So good to finally have a proper table, rather than just piles of books that collapsed onto each other all the time.<br />
<br />

Some of a huge pile of books I got for 50c each, my lovely perfumes c/o Smelly Cat, some 1950s cardigans opshopped recently.<br />

A good makeup day, presents to me from me, opshopped cutout belt and a novelty print 1950s dress that I've since sold (too tiny!).<br />

INSANELY GOOD NOVELTY PRINT SKIRT on @carmenzelda when I picked up some purchases off her, and said purchases - Swirl dresses!<br />
<br />
This only goes back to like January. Better start work on the next one! </div>

Argh, soz, work, busy, etc. Here are some outfit-y photos taken over the last few weeks, none of which are good enough on their own to warrant a new post but I guess if smooshed together they are somewhat okay? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2242_zps80158b33.jpg" width="290" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2270_zpsb289f8e8.jpg" width="314" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2260_zps3129f7fc.jpg" width="450" /><br />
1950s kangaroo-print novelty dress worn with opshopped braided leather belt, banana basket from my bf's mum and shoes from Ultra. <br />
<br />
I LOVE THIS DRESS. I Instagrammed it the day it arrived in the mail and I think it's my most-liked, most-commented-on photo ever haha. The print is KANGAROOS and the cut makes my bosom look majestic, and it was made in Riccarton in Christchurch, which is just around the road from where I grew up. The best part is I paid $26 for it. Nobody bid against me on Trade Me. Why?<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/Photoon6-03-14at447pm3_zps414bb049.jpg" width="580" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2095_zps4658c7b2.jpg" width="450" /><br />
Wearing 1950s Josella blue rose print dress and bolero set from Trade Me, 1950s sunglasses from Trade Me, shoes from Ultra, Cambridge Satchel from Recycle Boutique, 1950s yellow cardigan from Christie and Mac Fixed on Drama lipstick (in the second photo). This set of photos is sort of hilarious because it shows the difference between how I look in a Macbook selfie and how I look in real life. Hahahaha. <br />
<br />
This one is another amazing Trade Me find that nobody bid against me on last week. It is pretty much everything I look for in a garment, plus it has the matching bolero still with it! It is in pretty much brand new condition, and the colours are still very bright and perfect. Ugh. I love it so much. I've had such good Trade Me luck in the last couple of months!<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2228_zps65b26ffd.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_2190_zpsbcf05dd3.jpg" width="320" /><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1950s rosey dress from Recycle Boutique, sparkly pink Ruby belt from Recycle Boutique and purple 1960s Mary Janes from Recycle Boutique - a whole Recycle outfit, whoops. I didn't think this outfit looked very good, retrospectively.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another reason why I've been meaning to update this blog for aaages is that the amazingly friendly and understanding folks at <a href="http://www.smellycat.co.nz/">Smelly Cat</a> sent me over some perfumes to blog about! I was actually looking at purchasing some from their website anyway, as their fragrances are way cheaper than buying in stores, so the gift came as a lovely surprise.<br />
<br />
I chose Chloe Eau De Parfum, which a lot of my friends wear, and L'Eau d'Issey Florale, because my mum wore Issey when I was growing up. The Chloe is really beautiful, but the Issey is just something else entirely. I've been wearing it for maybe two months now, and I still do covert wrist sniffs throughout the day because the smell is so so good. It is rosey in the way that actual rose bushes are, and there is a fresh water undertone to it which keeps it crisp. Since I've started wearing it, a lot of people have commented on how good it smells. THANK YOU to Smelly Cat and I would very highly recommend them, not just for their bargain prices but their incredibly helpful and personable customer service.</div>

Warning, there are a lot of photos and they are a mix of proper camera and iPhone.<br />
<br />
This post takes place over Christmas/the start of January. So after Christchurch I zipped back to Wellington and had two hours to pack for a two-week camping trip in the North Island. My fella and I flew to Taranaki and had a beautiful Christmas with his family, who, like my family, eschew traditional Christmas celebrations and opt for a backyard-cricket-and-Pimms vibe, which suits me nicely.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0818_zps2a3c379b.jpg" width="400" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0821_zpsa7eca435.jpg" width="300" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then, post-Christmas, Jack and I set off on our road trip! There was rain forecast for the entire time, but we remained optimistic, hit up some amazing small-town opshops and made roadside sammies on our way north. I found some great 80s cotton print dresses for $1 each, perfect for balling up in the bottom of our little shared duffel bag until my other clothes got too filthy to wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0826_zps7b136e9e.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0828_zps581242d3.jpg" width="350" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0872_zps597f550d.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0856_zps90b49910.jpg" width="350" /><br />
<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
So first up we drove to Otatu Bay in the Coromandel, and on the way in we drove past a sign that said "FRESH OYSTERS", at which point we didn't even need to consult each other because, fresh oysters. We ate a dozen each, half battered and half raw, and they were a third of the price they are in Wellington. When we got to the campsite, we found that the family camping next to us had a boat and fished every day and they brought us even more beautiful fresh kai moana. It was a great start to the trip.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0985_zps08073795.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1011_zps5efda335.jpg" width="350" /><br />

</http:></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It rained on the second night we were there and so we moved the mattress from our teeny tiny tent into the back of the car, at which point we realised the car was ten times comfier than the tent. So for the rest of the trip we used to tent to store our chilly bin, and just slept in the car, with our heads up the back looking out the boot window at the stars every night. It was gorgeous and perfect and I was grateful, as always, for being 5"1' while my tall boyfriend's feet dangled off the edge of our folded-down-back-seat makeshift bed. Sleeping in the car for that long also cemented my view that yes, I CAN live in a van while driving across the United States, which is something I've always wanted to do but been unsure whether it would be liveable.<br />

The campsite and beach were great, in a calm little Coromandel inlet with pohutakawa everywhere . Also looking at these photos makes me regret not using my proper camera more and relying on my iPhone so much.<br />

After one wet night, the sun came up and we dried all our damp bedding! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_0899_zps4ff5d08f.jpg" width="500" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We drove 2.5 hours to Hahei beach and trekked over to Cathedral Cove, which was packed but lovely, and then arrived at Hot Water Beach at high tide, a.k.a. the complete wrong time to dig a hole down to the hot springs. We had a lovely paddle anyway. The Coromandel was basically exactly like the pictures made it out to be, and I am so glad I've finally seen it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1031_zpsf55514d3.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1032_zps92049ab6.jpg" width="350" /></div>

<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1103_zps859d346d.jpg" width="500" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next up we drove to the Far Far Far Far North, stopping off at the Hundertwasser Toilets, and camped out in a little farm site just south of Cape Reinga which is the northmost point of New Zealand. First up we went to the Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes, which neither of us had even heard of until we saw a small reference to it in one of those little free tourist maps and decided they it was giant enough to have the word 'Giant' in their name, they were essential viewing.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1107_zpsa653ad1e.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1109_zpsd2cf2436.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1117_zps072486c8.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1129_zpsf8714d0a.jpg" width="350" /><br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1165_zpsb551477c.jpg" width="500" />
<br />
<br />
And good god, I cannot make clear enough the scale of these things. THEY WERE SO GIANT. Approaching the dunes in the car, we saw a glimpse of one peeking through some trees and my throat immediately went tight - they looked like a series of massive sand tsunamis approaching land. All the photos in the world cannot show the largeness of these. We trekked barefoot up and down the dunes for maybe an hour and a half in the scorching northern sun, and every time we thought we'd found the edge of them there would just be another sand mountain on the other side. God. What fun.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1169_zps7601f463.jpg " width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1178_zpsdb112866.jpg" width="350" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1183_zps517722bf.jpg" width="500" /><br />

<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P1013987_zps42b0547a.jpg" width="500" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We saw all the touristy stuff, the lighthouse, the spot where two seas meet and cause whirlpools and so on. It was packed and very hot but so worth it. After that we were totally wrecked, so found a little beach to have a swim and some hummus sammies.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we drove to Paihia via 90 Mile Beach which was, true to its name, very long and also incredibly beautiful. Paihia was weird and way too crowded and we only hung around long enough to buy some local cheeses and be super disappointed that we couldn't find anywhere that sold oysters.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1266_zps96568c16.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1351_zpsd5e77d9f.jpg" width="350" /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we set up camp at our last campsite, Whananaki, which is run by the Department of Conservation. It was bloody gorgeous, all postcard-New-Zealand with its thick native bush on cliffs surrounding the beach, rocky caves and tidal pools and grassy dunes. We did nothing but swim and read, didn't leave the campsite, and it was perfect. The family on the site next to us told us about a private beach down the road, a 15 minute walk through some bush, and when we got there it truly was private. Just us, of a sunny afternoon, under a pohutakawa on a picnic blanket with our Paihia cheese and enamel mugs of warm Riesling. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1366_zps4bf8ab12.jpg" width="350" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/IMG_1394_zpsd034fd05.jpg" width="350" /><br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After that we drove back to Taranaki and had one more night in Jack's parents' place before flying home to Wellington. Onaero was beautiful, as always.<br />
<br />
Getting back to Wellington after this trip was kind of awful, only by comparison because being away was so great. South Island next summer? </div>

So I spent Christmas this year with my boyfriend's family in Taranaki, so I wanted to catch up with my parents before Christmas. The festive season doesn't mean a lot to us, but I barely get to see my parents because they live in Vietnam for 95% of the year so I was super excited to hang out with them and drink sav in the sun.<br />
<br />
When I arrived, I saw Aaron Gilmore in the airport! So the trip was off to a good start. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was also super excited to see Christie and go opshopping with her, such is customary every time I go back to Christchurch. First we stopped off at her place where I tried on everything in her wardrobe and we, as always, dressed in matching-ish outfits. It's a pretty regular occurence when we hang out that people ask if we are sisters, which is hilarious because do you know any sisters who have the same haircut and dress in the exact same way? Nooo. But we just run with it. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PC203882_zps8b98a32b.jpg" width="700" /><br />

<br />
But yeah, after like 5 hours of shopping and bargain-finding and a little bit of arguing over 1950s dresses (THANK YOU CHRISTIE, I LOVE THE DRESS SO MUCH!!!) we were parched and some fancy drinks at The Tannery were in order. The Tannery is a new development in Christchurch, full of sickeningly beautiful boutiques and homewares shops and cafes. We took some outfit snaps too, in front of the beautiful Christmas tree.</div>

If you asked me to describe my perfect dress in a series of keywords, or if you added up my top 10 favourite dresses and divided the result by 10, you'd get this dress. It's got every feature I require in exactly the right ratios - 1950s, decent cotton, blue, rose-print, a decent cut, a good length, sleeves and a work-appropriate neckline. Plus I didn't even have to engage in a bidding war to make it mine. Scooore.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My life at the moment is pretty much entirely consumed by planning for me and Jack's big Christmas-y camping break, but my temporary flatmate Zoe has a tripod so I nicked it to take some outfit photos. At first I tried to get Jack to do them for me but he isn't really photographically inclined (sorry, Jack) so I just got him to push the button once I'd lined up the shot, haha. The experience made me realise that it's dumb that I own like 100 dresses but am unable to spend $40 on a tripod of my own to take bloggy photos without needing someone's help, so I am definitely gonna get my own - but not until after she's moved out and taken her tripod with her.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is pretty obvious that I was messing around with different backdrop-y things, though. The white curtain is the cover for my wardrobe. Also let's just pretend my carpet isn't in desperate need of a vacuum and there isn't an empty plastic bag on the floor behind me. God. If I had photoshop I would've edited that out, trust me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
1950s blue rose-print dress - Trade Me</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Black and gold leather belt - opshopped</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
J pin - vintage sale</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Shoes - won from Mimco via Lost In The Haze </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lipstick - Mac Rebel</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Satchel - Cambridge Satchel Company<br />
Plus my usual rings and the only hairstyle I can be bothered with when it's this hot. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bonus photo: Jack was pushing the buttons on the camera and thought it would be hilarious for me to do this. For every one photo I post on here there are at least 50 outtakes featuring double chins and mid-blink eyes and poses even dumber than the ones that make it to the public viewing stage.</div>

I am by no means an expert on taking care of vintage, but I have made some terrible mistakes in my time which make me want to stop others from doing the same thing. Here is a non-exhaustive non-authoritative list of tips on how to look after vintage garments and make sure you can get the best out of them:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. <b>Handwash pretty much everything</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>I know it is a horrible chore and the washing powder makes your hands super sore, but it is really the best way to ensure your garments last for a long time and stay in good condition. The rough washing machine can cause tears, pills and fading and generally bash your clothes around in an unpleasant way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hand-wash almost everything. I know a lot of other vintage wearers put their cotton garments in the washing machine on delicate, but I don't trust my crappy old machine enough to do that. I wash in cold water with a tiny bit of gentle detergent dissolved into it, in the laundry tub, and gently swirl the garments through the water to ensure the detergent gets distributed through the fabric. I leave them for a wee soak as I wander off and do something else. If you haven't washed a garment before and are unsure how it will cope, do a spot test to ensure wetting the garment and exposing it to detergent won't damage the fabric. Dip an un-exposed part of the fabric into the solution and wait to see how it reacts before going ahead with a wash. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With my hardy cotton dresses, after hand washing I run them through a spin cycle to get rid of any excess moisture. I hang things out to dry in the sun to make them all crisp and lovely, but not for too long as direct sunlight will cause fading. If there is no sun - which there pretty much never is in Wellington - I hang them carefully across a clothes airer in our room with the dehumidifier on until they're well and truly dry.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you do need to put things in the wash, because hand-washing is time consuming, ensure they are colourfast first. Use a gentle detergent or powder and allllllways cold wash.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>2. You don't need to wash everything all the time</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Idk, I'm sure some people will think this is gross but I definitely don't wash my vintage dresses every time I wear them. Most of them get a lot of wears out of them until they actually need a wash. I am just not that dirty/sweaty a person and I don't think they need it a lot of the time. I do, however, take other measures to ensure my dresses stay nice and fresh even if they've been worn four times. Hanging them out to air can breathe a bit of new life into them. I hang them by some open windows or peg them out on the line to let the breeze do its thing. The sun is also great at killing bacteria and keeping clothes smelling fresh and lovely.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, it upsets me to waste good vodka on clothing but it really does the trick on freshening up clothes that have been worn once or have been in storage and smell a bit musty. A fine spritz from a spray bottle on any potentially malodorous areas will go a long way.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA273703_zps6a7f9879.jpg" width="650" />
<br />
<i>Some vintage nightwear and lingerie I opshopped that I am yet to soak.</i> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>3. Store carefully</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Very few clothes will take kindly to being hung on a plastic hanger on a rail. Most of my clothes are on granny-ish crocheted padded hangers I've picked up from opshops, but I don't have quite enough of them so some are still on wooden hangers and a few non-delicate non-vintage things on old wire or plastic ones. Knits and delicate or heavy fabrics can become stretched and damaged through the shoulders through being hung for a long time, so feel free to keep them carefully folded instead. Also, direct sunlight will fade fabrics quickly, so keep your wardrobe door closed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Heat and moisture will also damage garments. I had a horrible moment when I first moved into my damp Aro Valley flat where after a week I realised there was black mold all over a favourite novelty-print cotton dress that I'd left hanging against a wall. I tried everything to get it off but there are still a few faint black specks. Don't make the same mistake I did! Dehumidify as needed, or use moisture absorbing sachets and a lot of them. I also have little lavender sachets through my drawers and wardrobe, which not only make things smell lovely but keep insects pests away. <b></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>4. Repair as needed</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I need to take a little more of my own advice, as my sewing pile is a great untameable beast. <b> </b>However, it's definitely the best idea to get onto repairs while you are motivated and before you lose one of the big buttons to your favourite little 60s jacket and can't find another similar one anywhere and now you just can't do it up ever again wahhhh. SO YEAH, don't be like me! I find that if I buy something with the intent to alter it, I'd best do it within 24-48 hours or it will never. Get. Done. If a metal zipper is catching the surrounding fabric, replace or it get it done at a tailor before you get stuck in a dress or it rips while you're trying to pull it on or off (also something I've done. I hate myself).<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A good way to keep your clothes non-smelly is for you also to be non-smelly. The really lovely Jenna at <a href="http://www.ohnatural.co.nz/">Oh Natural</a> sent me some of the <a href="http://www.ohnatural.co.nz/soapwalla-deodorant-cream.html">Soapwalla deodorant cream</a> to try, and it's pretty lovely. There is something about rubbing on this mix of essential oils and natural clays that seems a lot nicer than slapping on a bit of old Dove from a plastic tube. Also the smell is amazing, although very lavender-y and I know some people are sensitive to that odour. <br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA213696_zpsbe9f470c.jpg" width="650" />
<br />
<br />
Jenna has also given me one to give to you guys, so<b> leave a comment including some way to get in contact with you if you'd like to try one for yourself</b>. This giveaway is for NZ and Aussie pals only, but I have a US-based one coming soon!</div>

I've lusted over the Karen Walker patio dress ever since it first came out in 2011, and I am so happy that it is finally mine! I found it for a really good price on Trade Me because the auction was ending on a Sunday morning, so I was bidding on it on my phone while at the veggie market. This dress was designed for a Royal New Zealand Ballet performance, and the skirt is made of fluoro vest nylon and has EIGHT full circles of fabric in it, plus the lining, so it moves and sits incredibly well. There is more information about the dress on <a href="http://www.threadnz.com/news/5827/15/Ballet-belles/d,thread-article">this Thread article</a>.<br />

Georgia Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11802835174547914151noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-386850766587108493.post-37703795379374976652013-10-03T11:19:00.000+13:002013-10-03T11:19:53.523+13:00My favourite five opshopped finds*<div style="text-align: center;">
*Well, my favourite opshop finds that I still have. There are some things I've bought and eventually sold and just regret it SO much now, like <a href="http://i56.tinypic.com/2ex6mmf.jpg">this cute pink rose dress I got for $2 in Nelson</a> and <a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5303934.jpg">this AMAZING 60s velvet floral dress I paid $20 for at Tassie Traders</a> and sold for the same price and could just kick myself in the face for getting rid of.<br />
<br />
But yeah, these are my top five finds that I've scrounged from charity shops and actually hung on to. My scores do not compare to those of <a href="http://cameliasandcrinolines.blogspot.co.nz/">Camelias and Crinolines</a> or <a href="http://helgavontrollop.blogspot.co.nz/">Helga</a>, but I'm pretty pleased with my wee collection. It was actually hard to scale it down to five, and I would've had to make it six if my absolute favourite black and white striped top wasn't in the wash.<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div>
In no particular order:<br />
</div>
<b>1. The copper rose border-print 1950s day dress</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023461_zps62440791.jpg" width="500" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023462_zpsfa4fc388.jpg" width="700" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know, I know. I talk about and wear this dress way too often. This dress is the opshop equivalent of that time I met Tim Shadbolt and he kissed my cheek and we walked around Wellington talking politics; a story you just tell over and over at parties and bring up all the time and all your friends know it way too well but YOU'LL NEVER STOP TELLING IT BECAUSE IT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR LIFE. This dress is my big win and my favourite thing to be like 'oh? This? Just from an opshop' about. It's getting to the stage where no1curr about how much I love this dress or how I got it, but whatever, it still makes me happy every time I put it on. <br />
<br />
And it was free. FREE. Someone actually looked in their wardrobe, examined this dress, and was like 'nah actually this isn't the most beautiful garment on earth, I'm going to throw it out'. And although that person is of questionable taste, I would like to thank them for bringing this into my life. Actually, Wellington is so small that one day I will be wearing this dress and someone will stop me on the street and tell me it used to belong to them and they donated it to the Aro Street Vinnies. I have seen people around Wellington tonnes of times wearing stuff I donated to the opshop or sold through consignment or on Trade Me. One girl had taken this great 80s fruit and veg print dress I sold and given it a mullet hem, which hurt me a lot to see.<br />
<br />
Anyway, love this dress, number one dress, etc.<br />
<br />
<b>2. The sheer</b> <b>chiffon 1950s party dress</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023454_zps08ee6dda.jpg" width="500" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023455_zps9d352c14.jpg" width="700" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023457_zps2a2412b5.jpg" width="500" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got this dress from the same reliable Aro Street Vinnies that I got the former at, except I actually had to pay for this one ($4, I think) because I bought it before I volunteered there. As you can see in the last photo it has some unfortunate brownish spills on the skirt, but whenever I wear it people are usually so busy making thinly-veiled insults and being shocked at the site of 21-year-old woman dressed like a four-year-old from 1955 that they don't notice the stains. But seriously, this must be one of those great dresses that was made for a chubby child (I did find it in the kids' section), so the fit is really good on me as a wide and short vintage lover. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the little diamante buttons and the sickeningly twee peter pan collar. I usually wear it with <a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/Photo259.jpg">something black and sexy underneath</a> so I don't look too much like an infant, but it also looks amazing with a plain slip and a knitted jumper with that great collar peeking out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>3. The gray peter pan collar coat </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023466_zps7216775e.jpg" width="500" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023467_zps98aebcbe.jpg" width="700" /><br />
<br />
I got this amazing gray woolen coat, also from the kids' section of an opshop, at the Anglicare Depot in Summer Hill in Sydney in 2010. It was $8. The depot is this big, gross warehouse full of huge bins of clothing to be picked through. You cram your finds into this big burlap sack that you are provided with and weigh it at the end and pay $8 per kilo, or thereabouts. It also has a more curated opshop where the prices can be quite high, but I was happy to pay the price of an airport sandwich for this coat. This is sort of disgusting, but I've worn this so much that the lining has shredded through the arms and body and I have to be careful when I put it on that I don't shove my hand into the no man's land between lining and shell. The piping is velvet and navy blue, if this needed any more cute details. And the pink pin is from the Warhol exhibit.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Minnie Cooper red mary janes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023463_zps2197ef65.jpg" width="700" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023464_zps2711e680.jpg" width="700" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I got these shoes from a little church opshop in rural Taranaki where the old ladies manning the store were super, super cute. They let me go through their stock in the back room and I found SO much good stuff that Jack's parents had to courier a huge bag of clothes down to us because we couldn't fit it all in our luggage for the flight home. I got these for either $3 or $4, and one of the ladies was like 'back in the day we used to call those Mary Quant shoes and wore them with white tights and short dresses', and every time I style them like that I think of her. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I got them I thought they were real 60s mary janes, but I later found out the logo on the sole was for Minnie Cooper, an NZ shoemaker whose footwear is renowned for being excellent quality and super comfy. They took a couple of breaking-in wears but now they are by far the comfiest shoes I own and I am constantly stalking Trade Me for more of her shoes in my size. I have tiny feet so they don't often come up, but I honestly think they'd be worth the $400 they are new because of their craftsmanship and durability. I've worn these a lot since I got them and they look amazing still. I've got my eye on <a href="http://www.minniecooper.co.nz/womens-shoes/capo">these</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>5. The leather backpack</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023471_zps746be196.jpg" width="500" /><img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA023472_zpsc958d802.jpg" width="500" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found this one Christchurch day opshopping with my brother. It was $4 and I ran over to him and was like 'Will, you NEED this backpack'. He thought it was ugly and I wasn't actually that sold on it, but I bought it anyway and the next day I realised it was THE MOST PERFECT BACKPACK EVER. I haven't had an ill thought about it since. Not long after I bought it, one of my stylish friends said he loved it and asked what I paid for it. I held up four fingers and he was like 'four hundred? That's not bad' haha. Score. Several people have offered to buy it off me since then.<br />
<br />
One of my biggest fears in life - this is telling about how chill my life is - is stuffing too many tomatoes in it at the veggie market one week and overloading it breaking it somehow and having to life the rest of my days without the style and convenience of a leather backpack. <br />
<br />
Honourable mentions to <a href="http://distilleryimage0.s3.amazonaws.com/f0cf6396ea9911e2a5e422000aaa08f8_7.jpg">ballerina dress I got for free when I bought a couch</a>,<a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P2080651.jpg"> 1950s chiffon ball gown with a print of flocked bows</a>, the <a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P7213204_zpsfb445563.jpg">blue velvet cape (not cheap but worth it)</a>, <a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P7051557.jpg">1950s wedding dress also from the Anglicare Depot</a>, and <a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/PA045900.jpg">peach pleated skirt that I still wear way too often plus BONUS the black and white striped top I mentioned earlier</a>. Man, this post makes me so bummed to have to work all the time so I can't go opshopping during the week now. Saturday opshopping sucks :(</div>

My awesome friend Morgan has finally started her beauty blog, and it is just as excellent as expected. She came over the other day and made me up in the style of one of my favourite bloggers! Read about it at <a href="http://hyacinthgirl.com/">Hyacinth Girl</a>.</div>

Wearing sheer 1950s daisy-print dress from Reycle Boutique, rose gold Repetti mary jane heels from eBay via Ana, heart-shaped perspex purse from Etsy, Datter necklace and ring and misc opshopped belt, plus NARS Afghan Red lipstick.<br />
<br />
My shoes sort of blend into my feet and my bag sort of blends into my dress... whoops. I got a new role at work and my boyfriend got a promotion so I wore this out to celebrate. My new thing involves starting at 7am and finishing at 3.30pm so it is actually still light after I finish work, so maybe I'll sort my shit out and start taking better outfit photos in the near future. Maybe not, though.<br />
<br />
I don't know if you can really tell (I hope you can?) but I am wearing makeup in these photos. Woo! I am SO excited about beauty stuff lately and I have basically spent all my spare money from my last four paychecks on makeup and skincare stuff. The catalyst for this was my pal Morgan (who will have a beauty blog up and running pretty soon) who is essentially a beauty guru and amazingly inspirational and useful when it comes to me sending her random photos I've found around the internet and asking her to tell me all the products I would need to look exactly like that.<br />
<br />
Morgan does these big beauty buys online and I've mooched off her international mail forwarding service to attempt to become more put-together and help towards my yo-pro aspirations. Pretty much everything I do now relates to my yo-pro aspirations tbh. The other day I went to Morgan's to pick up a haul of lipsticks and stuff that had just arrived for me, and got to pore through her impeccably organized makeup collection and damn, it has me inspired. But as this is sort of a new thing for me, I have been pretty lazy with my usual kind of harm minimization deal that I try to adhere to in my everyday consumption.<br />
<br />
Because I don't really know a lot about makeup and my mum never really wore it, I've just been picking and mixing with a totally miscellaneous array of products that seem useful and/or fun, like undereye concealer to help with the 6am starts, and<a href="http://tartecosmetics.com/tarte-item-lights-camera-splashes"> waterproof mascara</a> because I am yet to learn that rubbing my eyes all the time = bad for makeup - but also glittery silver eyeliner because glitter. I do try to be as ethical as is possible and reasonable with my general consumption, through buying almost everything I own second hand, repairing my clothes and shoes and taking care of them, and buying local as much as possible - except makeup, because prices in NZ are insane. I am loath to pay $62 for anything, let alone for one lipstick.<br />
<br />
However, I do not pretend to be completely consistent and there are always areas in which I could do better in terms of conscious consumption, and makeup is definitely one of them. As I learn more about beauty and how to optimize my face's cuteness, I want more and more to invest in really nice quality makeup that will last well. It is so easy and fun to buy cheap makeup to play around with and try to find out what looks good, but hopefully as time goes on I will be able to justify spending a little bit more to get a product which is quality, natural and not tested on animals, such as <a href="http://tartecosmetics.com/">Tarte cosmetics</a>’ great cruelty-free and natural products. I don't really want to support animal testing by voting with my dollar so I am going to try my hardest to be more consistent with my approach to makeup and invest in great quality products. I am really excited to conquer my fear of looking like a kid playing in their mum's makeup bag and start looking FIERCE.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I wore this to go get a falafel and some dolmades and some hair of the dog for my hangover. This is that dress that I was given as a gift from my manager at the opshop I used to volunteer at. She found it while sorting through donations and gave it to me to say congratulations when I landed my Big Girl Job. I wear it so often that I hadn't realised it had never featured on here before. Also wearing a new Ruth Rees Originals cropped dark green 50s jacket with awesome rectangular bakelite buttons, from <a href="http://www.bragvintage.co.uk/">Brag Vintage</a>. I have a really similar one to this but in a mid-brown colour that my dad got me three years ago and I've worn so much the lining is starting to disintegrate. I am always searching for its perfect replacement and I think this one might come close. </div>

Wearing a 1950s velvet floral rose-print dress from Trade Me, opshopped cropped cardigan, opshopped fur collar safety pinned onto it, opshopped belt, opshopped McKinleys t-bar school shoes, clear heart perspex hangbag from Etsy and velvet 1950s bow headband from Etsy. I am pulling those faces because my brother was doing some Austin Powers impression while taking these. Wow my face is so wonky around the jaw. <br />
<br />
This outfit kinda seems full-on zany old lady to me, and I'm okay with that. I feel like all I need is some big round glasses and lilac hair and it could legitimately be transplanted to a 70-year-old former ballet teacher or something. Also, I've written and re-written a paragraph on the ethics of wearing second hand fur and leather a few times, but everything I say on the matter sounds horribly trite and self-important. Let me leave it at: on a sliding scale which goes from very evil to very good, I think there are a lot worse things a person can do than wear a second-hand, opshopped, 60-year-old garment made of an animal.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A few weeks ago I had a Friday off work because I covered someone's Sunday, and used the rare free weekday to do some opshopping. Jack and I bussed out to Johnsonville, where we have historically had good luck, and we were not disappointed. In the first shop I got these sweet 70s leather platforms. Excuse my pilled old tights. In the next I found this amazing dress printed with sketches of ballerinas as well as these perfect leather McKinleys NZ-made t-bar school shoes. Jack found a super nice three-piece late 60s suit, and we got all that stuff for free because we bought this AMAZING comfy and gorgeous 60s couch for $40!</div>

Lazy photos off my Instagram.<br />
<br />
And while I am posting photos from my Instagram, I've got to share this one because my readership is mostly Kiwis. I went to see Ginger & Rosa the other night and in the foyer who did I see being interviewed for a TV show but my favourite political figure, Tim Shadbolt! I stood around 'texting someone' until he was free and swooped in for the handshake and political chit-chat, which turned into us hanging out (!) and walking around Wellington together (!!) until I had to go meet some pals for dessert. He is, obviously, incredibly funny and cool and such fun. I am so happy to have met him! Most MPs I would never approach in public, and when I saw Aaron Gilmore furniture shopping I just gawked, but as soon as I saw him I was like THIS HAS TO HAPPEN.<br />
<br />
Ugh soz for the bad photo, my crappy water-damaged phone does not perform well in low light.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the end Tim got my email address so I hope he contacts me! Maybe we can be penpals. I am so starstruck haha. I know this has nothing to do with fashion. Um, I was wearing my blue cape at the time if that counts for anything. That thing brings me amazing luck I swear.</div>

Wearing electric blue velvet 1960s cape from an opshop via Christie, 1950s cotton floral St Michael's dress via eBay for $2, belt off another opshopped dress and old back 50s cashmere cropped cardigan. I don't remember what shoes I was wearing but it might've been my white Chloe ballet flats.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I am wearing an electric blue velvet 1960s cape! Pretty great, right? Back when I lived in Christchurch and Christie and I used to go opshopping together all the time, we found this cape in one of our favourite shops. It was pretty expensive for an opshop (not actual expensive) and so neither of us bought it, but we kept coming back to it and trying it on over and over again until finally Christie bought it. And I pretty much coveted it ever since. Christie and I have a thing going on where we have dibs on certain items in each other's wardrobes for when they get sick of them, and earlier this year I had a couple of 50s dresses to get rid of so swapped them with her for this after a few years of reminders that I loved it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/33727_10150096882322646_3525339_n.jpg" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's Christie looking adorable in it in 2010. Anyway, now the cape is mine and I wear it like once a week. Every time I wear it people stop me on the street and in bars and shops and at the office to tell me how amazing it is, which is a nice feeling. It is surprising how many things in my wardrobe go with electric blue.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am trying to be a more frequent blogger, so will hopefully post some more outfit photos later in the week. My brother is back from overseas and the days are slooowly getting longer so the conditions are more conducive to outfit photography.<br />
<br />
<b>Edit:</b> I wrote and scheduled this post on Sunday before central New Zealand experienced a rather nasty magnitude 6.5 earthquake at 5pm. I have today, Monday, off work because my office is in the city. It doesn't really feel like a relaxing day home as I am too anxious to enjoy it. Some reclaimed land has slipped back into the sea and central city workers have been ordered to stay home while damage is assessed and we experience ongoing significant aftershocks. Wellington is a highly active seismic zone and it is an incredibly scary time, especially for the many Wellington residents who moved here from Christchurch following the earthquakes there. If anyone who has been affected by the quakes wants to chat, my email address is in the 'about' section. </div>

*So the title isn't entirely accurate. It's three gifs because my computer couldn't process the images as one, and it's not actually every dress. There were a few in the wash, a big pile to be sold, my mending pile, a couple that Jack's mum opshopped for me, one that Will got made for me in Vietnam, some stuff that doesn't fit me in storage and since I took these photos, I've bought four more. I got a big tax return, okay? But I finally got contents insurance for my shit, which I've been meaning to do since my neighbours last year fell asleep with a heater knocked over and nearly burned the place down.<br />
<br />
I remember when I was like 15 reading a newspaper article about a girl whose house burned down and she had no insurance on her big vintage collection, and that would be so awful. I would be so gutted if I lost my collection, not just because it's all pretty but because there's stuff I could never replace, like the blouse my mum made in home economics when she was 14 or the dress I made from a 1940s pattern for a school ball when I was 16, or the 1950s dress my manager at the opshop gave me to say congrats on landing my first big girl job. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I got insurance, and it took ages to sort out because of the 'special nature' of my 'collection'. Most policies pay less for stuff the older it is, but clearly that wasn't going to work for me. I was also asked to take a photo of all the stuff I want to insure, so I snapped these rather unglamorous photos quickly one afternoon. Christie gave me the idea that they'd look cool as a gif, so here we go. Sorry it's a lazy post. The weather has been crap here and Will has been in Vietnam and so I've had nobody to take photos for me. I should probs get a tripod.<br />

show off here. It is pretty much everything I could ask for in a dress, including having POCKETS!!!! Plus I
was the only bidder on it for some reason, so got it super cheaply.
Sorry for the overload of blue + roses in these photos! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I actually wore this to work on Monday, but I did a 12 hour day and by
the time I got home all I wanted to do was eat soup in bed so didn't
photograph it. I recreated it for some outfit photos, kindly taken by my
brother while sitting on my bed as part of our high-tech new set up. I am doing that pose with the foot because Will was calling out to me that the bottom of the photos was too dark to see my nice shoes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got these shoes on the weekend from Recycle Boutique, and just as I was buying them I ran into <a href="http://adventuresofagirlfromthenaki.blogspot.co.nz/">Trees</a> for the first time ever, which is surprising because Wellington seems like a pretty tiny place most of the time. We talked about having a Wellington blogger get-together thing, so please email me if you are interested! My address is our the 'about' section. Anyway, these shoes are suuuuuuuper comfy and amazing quality, plus they've already been broken in which is a plus. I often think I'd be willing to pay a huge amount of money for a pair of cute, plain, comfy black flats that will last for longer than a year, and I think I may have found them for a bargain. I feel like by the time I am, like, 25 I will have slowly curated this perfect vintage wardrobe full of the best weirdest nicest things ever, and these shoes feel like an important building block in this process. </div>

It is officially winter here and it's sort of depressing that we have another three months of short days and days that don't get above seven degrees, but also 'cause it gets dark so early that when I get home from work at 5.30pm the daylight is well over. My brother and I have devised an outfit photo-taking set up involving lots of lamps and unnatural light, and it seemed to work out on yesterday's test run while it wasn't yet completely dark outside.<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Lol at my faces and pose. I need to figure out how to look normal in outfit photos. I'm wearing a 1950s pale blue lace dress with scalloped neckline and hemline from the Emporium Vintage sale with a cardigan off Etsy feat. Vivian cheerleader patch also off Etsy, opshopped belt, rose brooch from my friend Alex from years ago, old tights and Melissa velvet wedges from Recycle Boutique.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A couple of weekends ago a great Wellington vintage shop, Emporium, had a massive sale on a Saturday afternoon. Jack and I arrived half an hour before it was set to start, thinking we were being super organised, and were greeted with a crowd of 100+ fellow vintage lovers on Cuba Street. By the time the door had opened even more people had gathered, and we were pushed up the stairs in the most intense throng. It was scarily riotous, and I'd imagine had I been less freaked out I could've got way more amazing stuff. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My vintage senses were a little paralysed by anxiety, but I still came away with this dress, as well as a white Lanz sundress, a floral striped cotton dress and a cropped pale blue 50s cardigan.<a href="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P1140146_zps337ff221.jpg"> I tried this dress on when it was $95 in January 2012</a>, so I was chuffed to get it for a fiver. My friend Madds was actually trying it on and even though it fit her perfectly and looked amazing, she still decided to let me have it. Score! Also, I wore my yellow striped Horrockses dress to the sale, and four different people tried to steal off me it while I was trying other stuff on, huddled in the corner of the bar with others in varying states of undress.</div>

Almost exactly a year ago I made <a href="http://thevelvettes.blogspot.co.nz/2012/05/vintage-new-zealand-fashion-labels.html">this post</a>, with pictures of some of my favourite made-in-NZ labels on my vintage garments. It has proven to be one of our most viewed posts, mostly hits from people googling the names of labels, which I do all the time, trying to find information on them. I get a bit sad sometimes when I think about all the manufacturers who have just disappeared from the face of the country, and when I look them up all there seems to be is archived Trade Me listings from years ago. I decided to do a 2.0 of that post, which last time inspired a few people to do the same thing, as I've acquired a few more nice locally-made garments since then. Please link me if you do anything like this! I love labels, and I always get so excited when I spot a good one.<br />
<br />
Also if you have any 1950s or 1960s NZ-made dresses (or any clothes or shoes, really) that you would like to sell, please get in contact with me at georgianess at gmail dot com.<br />

Last time I posted about a great 1950s floral dress I have by California Cottons, and I have received a few emails from people about this label, because dresses by them are SO great. These are three of the best dresses I own. The first is a beautiful cap-sleeved blue velvet number I paid $17 for at Recycle, the second is my birthday dress, and the third I got on Trade Me, although it is sorta cheating because the label doesn't specify where it was made. As far as fellow fan <a href="http://secretdreamworldofavintagefashionista.blogspot.co.nz/">Holly</a> and I can ascertain, the maker has no real connection with California. It seems like most of these dresses were made in the UK, and it must've been a pretty upmarket label as the dresses SO nicely made with wonderful linings, built-in petticoats and hand-stitched detailing.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122734_zpsb759581e.jpg" width="750" />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122735_zps6c268530.jpg" width="750" /> Jantzen is another big-name international label that was manufactured under license in New Zealand in the 1940s and 1950s, and I believe still is.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122715_zps659e2500.jpg" width="750" />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122716_zps7547ef46.jpg" width="750" />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122717_zps33c3c5b0.jpg" width="750" /> A couple of my absolute favourites - my Horrockses 1950s cotton dresses. The first one was manufactured under license in New Zealand by California Productions, and the second is made by Travis Casuals but using a quintessential floral striped Horrockses fabric, and has the same label as my Horrockses apron I opshopped last year. Both these dresses are, like my California Cottons, made to an exceptionally high standard. <a href="http://cameliasandcrinolines.blogspot.co.nz/2012/05/dont-put-your-labels-on-me.html">Camelia</a> also has a California Productions Horrockses dress which she posted about last year, and there is a truly superb one on the website of <a href="http://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/ObjectDetails.aspx?oid=1150718">Te Papa</a>, our national museum.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122713_zpse10473fb.jpg" width="750" />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122714_zps6fd4f1c1.jpg" width="500" /><br />
California Productions also manufactured this adorable Miss Hit Parade woolen peter pan collar 1960s dress that I opshopped in Petone last weekend. It is way too small for my generous bosom, but so adorable. <a href="http://photonews.org.nz/nelson/issue/NPN73_19661112/fig-NPN73_19661112_043b.html">This</a> is the only reference I could find to that label, but I did waste a lot of time browsing that website, which archives the newspapers from the area my family is from. So many pictures of relatives from across the 20th century!<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x407/georgianess1/P5122711_zpsb0696555.jpg" width="750" /><br />
The only info I could find about Suzy Gowns, the label on this great black tafetta 1950s skirt that the seller told me her mum wore a lot at the beginning of the 1950s, was an ad from a 1953 Upper Hutt newspaper for a situation vacant at the factory.<br />
<br />

I got this Care Free Fashions rose and lace and gingham border-print day dress from Recycle recently. It has an awesome sailor collar as well, which is admittedly a bit twee even on me.<br />
<br />

This Roydon 1950s rose printed dress has a special place in my heart, because I have a photo of my great aunt Rosalie wearing a dress of a very similar style when she was my age. Both she and her sister, my grandma, were of very similar builds to me, and every time I go vintage shopping with my mum she sighs over dresses and says they are just like ones that Julie and Rosalie used to wear. I so so wish they'd kept them all, but they are a notoriously un-sentimental bunch. My grandma donated her beautiful lace full-skirted wedding dress from 1956 to the Salvation Army, which makes me super sad as it would've fit me. But enough of that, let's focus on the cute dresses I do have that aren't lost to the decades!<br />

These 1950s or early 1960s dresses by Another Beejay Garment, Kendells and Ladylook dresses were all from the same Trade Me seller. These were the things she was getting rid of when she moved, so I would die to get my hands on the stuff she kept.<br />

I got this amazing 1950s cotton day dress with a big purple floral print on Trade Me the other day, because I have no self-control. It has been entirely stitched by hand with the neatest, tiniest little stitches ever. Even though it's massively seasonally inappropriate I wore it today.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Worn with a 50s black cashmere cardigan that I've had for ages, rose pin from my friend Alex ages ago, pink belt off another dress, opshopped t-bar heels that I think are originally from Farmers, and opshopped 80s sunglasses that I got yesterday in Petone.<br />
<br />
Also, this is hopefully the last time you'll ever see me with this grotty haircut. Growing out my fringe ("bangs") was a terrible decision, but now they are so long I can't just trim them back to the way they were, so I am getting a free haircut later this week from a student hairdresser, thank god.</div>

We went to Taranaki last week and it was the best. I am irrationally scared that writing about how great it was will replace my actual memory of how great it was, but damn, it was great. Jack's parents live on a beautiful verdant market garden on the beach, so all there is to do is go on walks and eat and drink and read by the fire and read in the hammock and go opshopping, and because his family are so nice it's like staying in a cosy well-decorated hotel where all the staff are your best friends. Sighhhh.<br />

While I was there I also had the pleasure of meeting Jack's lovely grandma, who is a bit of a master knitter. I totally should've bought the Chauvanist Pig board game, although I do not regret leaving behind the mug o' condoms. I did find lots of other great things in opshops, though. I don't have proper photos of any of them yet so here are some Instagram repeats:<br />

Perfect and super comfy red 1960s mary janes which are NZ made and were barely worn when I got them! Plus a rather warm teal mohair Scottish-made cape, then the perfect 1970s pink striped tee worn over a 1990s spotted dress.
