Peter Pan Syndrome

If we have a personal relationship on any level, chances are you've heard about this dress. After finding it on Etsy three weeks ago, I fell completely in love. If this dress were a guy, I would've checked his Facebook every hour to see if there were any comments there from other girls. I would've driven past his house regularly to see if I could spot him through the windows. I would've memorised his university schedule in order to co-ordinate 'accidental' meetings.

No, seriously, I don't do that with guys. Probably because I've never met one that I like as much as I like this dress. So I bought it, and I enforced a 6-week shopping ban to punish myself for dropping a massive amount of money on it. I thought about it every day until it got here, and now... things have changed between us.

I still love it, don't get me wrong. But I have no idea how to wear it. Maybe I've built it up too much in my head, and now I can't see any outerwear or accessories or hairdos enhancing its already astounding beauty. I've had it hanging on my dressform since I opened the package, hoping divine inspiration would reach me.

So, dear readers, I ask for your help. What do I wear this with?! Bear in mind it's winter here, and I had goosebumps while these photos were being taken. How do I style such an amazing dress? Please give me your suggestions, and I'll put together some sort of little prize for the person whose comment inspires my look. I'll post me wearing it next week!

For your time, here's my brother Will looking dapper in his thrifted garb. Jealous that he got that hair from the gene pool.

  1. I love the idea of you paring it with a bunch of navy/dark colored items so that the collar pops out kinda like this DKNY runway look: http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2011/07/29/0729-dkny-fall-2011_fa.jpg and this outfit from Vivian: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jVngRFoxt5w/TPlrQifPeqI/AAAAAAAAAAo/Q6aSLvxdq4w/s1600/Photobucket-1.jpeg

  2. Love the dress and your analogy to a guy on Facebook is hilarious. A dress so pretty doesn't need much styling, but some white tights may be cute with the bright collar.

  3. Oh Georgia; it truly is a beautiful dress! I think if I styled it I would team it with a darling brooch of a bicycle or a bow - something like Cait of Wayward Daughter would do! I would also wear a bowler hat too! As for shoes - you've done it to perfection! I love your tbar shoes!

  5. That dress is just darling (I know, I know, I had to make the reference, but it really is!) I think tights of almost any color would look good with it, and it has a nice bodice to decorate with a pin or brooch. I like the idea of a red, orange, yellow or green cardigan with it too. Oh, also, if you layered a sweater (jumper in NZ?) over it, the collar would look so cute sticking out at the top!

  6. I've gone through similar love affairs too where you wonder about the sacrifices you've made and what you're getting in return but I think this dress is fab :) I'd probably wear high heels with it and maybe some white tights and a white cardigan. Or as Heather said a jumper would be lovely with the peter pan collar peeping out!

  8. It's lovely. Well worth a 6 week shopping ban. Since I love the cliche red, white and blue combination, I would say pair it with some red tights and a red cardigan. A cardigan with a wide neckline would be good so the collar can go over the top. Also, maybe plaited hair with a white ribbon to match the collar. I love your brother's outfit too.

  9. haha!!! that was so funny.

Hmmm if this dress were mine (i wish!!!) I feel like this dress is a style on its own. Less is more, its so pretty. dont over style it. Maybe some brown shoes and a wee brown bag (like this? http://afinedayforsailing.blogspot.com/2011/03/general-store.html)...or go red! that would be awesome. I wish I was just chilling in your room so I could see all your shoes and accessories. x

  10. Hehe...I love it! You had me laughing and I do agree, that is one gorgeous dress. Considering it's winter and in winter I am perpetually freezing... I would most definitely wear it with a pair of white opaque tights and black mary janes. Though it's beautiful enough to take a more simple approach with it as well...like with a simple pair of oxfords. Either way or any way you style it, I don't think you can go wrong. It is just that amazing:) Oh btw, I absolutely love your blog:) xx Marisa

  11. What a beautiful dress - the color and vintage feel pulled me right in. So glad you decided to purchase it! Yay! It can be so hard to find something you love - sometimes, you just have to give into the craving. I know I have done it before. But you only live once, right?

Thanks oh so much for stopping by my blog today. I clicked over to visit yours and I am so glad I did. It's lovely! Looking forward to reading more in the future! :)

  12. Thanks so much for your comment! It was so very sweet :) I love your blog as well and your styling is adorable! So, call me crazy, but I really like to layer colors in the winter AND it's the perfect season because you can layer so much! That blue color is so gorgeous with mustard and I try to wear them together as much as possible :) Maybe try something like this?

In all honesty, I think the way you're wearing it is just a perfect summer look :) So simple and understated, but perfectly classic!

  14. Well, I'd wear it with thick grey tights... because I wear everything with grey tights!

I do that all the time with dresses... swoon and swoon and then not be that bothered with them when they arrive!

  15. Aww, I love that Tricia referenced my outfit! But yes, I would wear a cardigan 60's secretary style to contrast the white Peter Pan collar. And for outwear, maybe a nice wool, Princess cut tweed coat?

  16. What an adorable dress! Peter pan collars aren't really my thing (though I love them on others), so I'm also at a bit of a loss as to how to style it. I do think it would look perfect with some heidi braids, though! Just to be wild, I might go for a tooled leather belt and some (cowboy) boots with brown tights and a gray, wool cardi. But that might just be because I think everything looks better with boots!
